Hi all,
My daughter was in an ability group in year 5. There were 6 classes of yr
5/6 in her school. All the 6 teachers organised their timetables, so that
for 90mins 3 times a week, students attended one of the 7 ability groups for
the maths lesson ( they also had a remedial group) At the beginning of the
year, all students did a diagnostic math test ( ACER) to determine
placement. The placement was not permanent, students moved up and down the
levels according to the students or parents requests or for other reasons.
Initially my dd was placed in a middle level group because she often doesn't
do well in some tests. Fortunately her teacher recognised her gifts and
allowed her a trial in the top group and my dd found the work was in fact at
an optimum level for her. She stayed in this group all year working at
around upper yr 7/ yr 8 maths level, while still in yr 5. On the other hand
several other students requested an alternative placement because they were
finding the work too difficult, They were moved without any fuss. My dd
really enjoyed the challenge, the pace and content of the class. She also
quicky formed strong friendships with the other kids in the class.
