May I suggest you get hold of the book
"My Rebel Schools" by Harold Matthews, Scolastic, 1999, ISBN 1 86504 198,

My library holds it so if it is not available through normal channels 
try ILL.

He deals specifically with ability grouping (pp42-57) and how the school 
was run (pp32-41). A very interesting read.

He was the principal of Artarmon Experimental school for 22 years so his 
innovative ideas are not just theory but have been shown to work.

Sadly it takes a visionary leader guided by deeply held principles---- 
"the child comes first" ---- to maintain this sort of school. It does 
show it *can* be done though.
