My son has had writing difficulties since the beginnng. He would even
refuse to do activities he loved in primary school that required him to
write and when he did write, it was pretty awful, very traumatic. He went
through the usual ot which helped , then went backwards after. Eventually
we were referred to Judith Laszlo, an (ex, I think) University of WA psych
professor for 30 years, who works with kinaesthetic memory. When she tested
him, she said he had no body memory of how each letter was shaped. He had
to visually reconstruct the letter each time he wrote it (which is what I
thought we did anyway). Well, after ten sessions with her, his writing
still wasn't that great ( will never be!) but he had completely lost his
fear of and absolute refusal to do any writing task. This was in Year 5. He
is now in Year 9 and still a messy writer, but happy enough to do it.

I don't know if anyone else here knows anything much about this subject, or
if the stubbornness you mention could be related to this type of difficulty,
but it worked well for my son.
