I don't think that the "difference" is true.

Our kids may be brighter than average but most still need to be 
taught. It is the level of material, speed of learning and, 
perhaps, style of teaching that differ.

Intelligence doesn't equal experience.

Plus, learning by yourself can send you down a lot of blind 
alleys; good teaching can short-cut some of that.
