[Oz-gifted] Straight out gifted

Marilyn

I am "just gifted". I am in the HG range. My dh is "more" gifted than I
am, but is a visual spatial learner, so doesn't have a number as such (when
he did his IQ tests at school he was found to be "average" despite the fact
he couldn't actually read at that point).

My two kids are combination - my dd is gifted, but with VS characteristics.
My ds is more like his dad, but without the reading problems. Both have
overexcitabilities and sensitivities.

That all being said, I think that maybe nowadays we look at the individual
characteristics more. My dh was diagnosed dyslexic at school. I was just
called "quiet, studious, fussy with clothes etc". Looking back I am fairly
visual in my learning style, but have very bad eyesight, so have compensated
by developing a more auditory learning style.

I went to an OC school, and kids there were hyperactive, and "allergic to
food colourings". Some of them were considered "odd", and probably had ASD
characteristics, but weren't categorised as such. I think it is more a case
that more research has been done and theories formulated (thinking in
particular visual spatial learning - since the 80's) , than these
characteristics not being around.
