I also went to OC school but none of us were noticeably
hyperactive or allergic to food colourings (allergies to food are
probably far less common than people think).
As to categorisation, I incline to the view that people sometimes
whack labels on other people because they display behaviours
which they judge to be inappropriate in certain circumstances.
One persons's "hyperactive" is another's "full of beans". (I'm
not by any means dismissing genuine problems/difficulties.)
