L has started Year 1 and has the same teacher as last year, a woman
who understands him very well. We're planning to meet in the next
week or so (along with the literacy teacher and school counsellor) to
work out a rough plan for him this year. She has asked him to
provide a list of topics in which he is interested, so that she can
integrate them into the curriculum somehow.
She's pretty sure he'll be using a self-paced computer program for
Maths, but Literacy is a bit of a puzzle. L is a fluent reader with
a vast vocabulary, but doesn't have the knowledge base for much yet.
For example, he can certainly read the old joke "Doctor! Doctor! I
feel like a pair of curtains!" but doesn't understand the punchline,
even though he laughs. He understands puns, but is unable to create
them.
Does anyone have any ideas for literacy activities that their
children have enjoyed at about 8yo standard?
