Kate

Make sure that you investigate the online resources available that will
encourage students to write and read others' contributions including:
* interactive quizzes (already prepared, created by you and by
the students) eg use Hot Potatoes http://www.halfbakedsoftware.com/
which is free to educators and which has six quiz formats that can be
delivered from a single PC without internet access.
* email groups, epals, bookwraps set up by you for your students
 ( http://www.eteachers.com.au/Indigenous/PromotingL
<http://www.eteachers.com.au/Indigenous/PromotingL&N/The%20Book%20Rap%20
Project.htm> &N/The%20Book%20Rap%20Project.htm )
* Discussion Forums (free facility available at Tapped In
(http://ti2.sri.com/tappedin/do/WelcomeAction?state=displayChatRoomFrame
)
* Contextual learning eg online teen magazine sites - suitably
sourced as appropriate for the classroom, of course.

Check out the resource page on my website that I used during a PD
session on using ICTs to promote Literacy and Numeracy for Indigenous
students. Many (if not all) of the ideas would most likely be able to
be used. http://www.eteachers.com.au/Indigenous/samples.htm

One of the key factors for success will be using resources that do not
match the reading age/literacy level but rather those which are in
keeping with the chronological age - a piece of advice I picked up while
working with teachers in a Special Education School earlier this year.

Subject: [Oz-teachers] Remedial reading question

Hi folks,

I am in a new role for 2004, working with teenagers having difficulty
with learning, particularly in Literacy skills. Instead of owning my own
lovely bunch, I will be working with kids across 3 or 4 Yr 7 classes.

Would anyone like to share any strategies, tips, hints clues, advice!!!
so I can really connect with these kids and do the best possible for
them?

Cheers,
Kate Smith
