[Oz-teachers] Behaviour

Dear List,
I just wanted to get people's idea/comments on a particular situation and 
how they might deal with it. 
While working in a local primary school grade 2/3 a young boy when asked
to do something replied "Why should I no one likes me" This child
throughout the day had been quite disruptive and has a bit of a
reputation for being mischeif (sorry about the spelling of that word).
All the child was asked to do was sit quitely while the teacher address
the class.
So what would people do in this situation.
Comments/suggestions/strategies.
