It sounds like you are after a Spam Filter and Norton Antivirus will have a limited effect unless it is part of the Internet Security suite or you have the separate product Norton Antispam. NAV will help control any spam messages which contain a virus but it is more likely you are dealing with prolific mailouts.

The best free application I have used is Mailwasher http://www.download.com/3001-2382_4-10450721.html and the commercial version Mailwasher Pro http://www.mailwasher.net/ is excellent (I know of small businesses using it successfully). Mailwasher is good because you have a chance to preview your email and delete the spam off the server before downloading to your machine. It has the option to bounce email back (so it looks like your email address never existed anyway so they might give up - not always successfully because most spammers spoof the return address) but you can blacklist domains which starts to cut down on the spam pretty quickly.

Alternatively you can download all your email and have products like McAfee Spamkiller or Cloudmark redirect the suspect spam to a separate folder which you can open and review. I don't personally like this option but it is popular with many people.

Reference Adrian's original link to Ccleaner, I agree this is a great product and used it when working as a technician to fix Windows machines with a myriad of problems ranging from failing to shutdown to lock ups etc. Use the "Issues" option under "Cleaner" to clean up the registry. The Uninstall tool also often works better than the Windows utility to remove all traces of problem applications.

  Hi All

Eight of every 10 messages I receive are unsolicited rubbish.

Pardon my ignorance but is there anything I can do other than exercise my delete finger?

I have Norton's Antivirus - should that help?

(Apologies if this has been addressed in this list)

    Hi All,

This freeware app cleared almost a gig of C from my hard drive.

The kids and I have been testing it all week and no one has had their registry deleted ;) Mind you... you prob need to be a bit careful with what you approve to be deleted.

It has improved the performance of my machine big time.

    cheers
