Hi Rod
Your Ed Dept should have some standard framework for all major medical
issues. We have kids with asthma plans, epipen allergy plans for beestings
etc and have had diabetic kids in the past. All conform to a plan set by WA
Ed Dept and adapted to suit in consultation with the parents and dependent
on age and level of independence. Generally printed out complete with a
photo and placed on a notice board in the staff room and in the classroom if
necessary for relief teachers.
I had a diabetic kid a year or so ago and we had a plan which outlined what
his blood sugar levels should be, when he had to test, what to do if he was
low, emergency contacts of parents, doctor, ambulance (if required tell them
its a diabetic emergency and they give you priority) and the Perth Diabetic
clinic at our major hospital. All went smoothly even though he was only
diagnosed during the year - mind you he was a year 7 student and proved to
adapt to things very well. I also had some emergency food in a container on
my desk just in case it was required. Steps might be different with a
younger student. A private place for testing was something we had to think
of too - he was given access to the sick room and I asked him to report
levels to me for the first few weeks.
I can find our plan if you would like but its probably safer to go thru what
your Central Office requires first.
Let me know if I can help further.

Subject: [Oz-teachers] Diabetes Policies
G'day everyone,
Hope you are enjoying the weekend, after a hard weeks work!
I am wondering if anyone would have developed a Diabetes Policy at their
school.
We have a child with diabetes at school and another one on the way next
year. We want to ensure we are able to cater for their needs. Policy is a
good beginning.
TIA
Rod
