We could also include all our "BIG" icons: Big Pineapple, Big Banana,
Big Merino, Big Prawn....

Can oz-teachers claim iconic status?

how about our natural (Uluru, Daintree, Great Barrier Reef, SW Tasmania,
etc), historic (Gallipoli, Kokoda, Eureka, etc.) cultural (Waltzing
Matilda, Aboriginal Art, Banjo Paterson, Slim Dusty, Minogues, Paul
Hogan, Steve Erwin, etc.) sporting (Bradman, etc.), animals (Kangaroo,
Koala, Platypus, etc.) icons

I am trying to put together a list of iconic Australian institutions
that are part of the Australian
identity and that Yr 5/6 should know something about. So far I have
Royal Flying Doctor Service
School of the Air
Royal Surf Life Saving Association
Rural/Country Fire Service
ANZAC Day
Melbourne Cup
Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme

What others should be included?

I am also interested in events that shaped the cultural make up of this
country such as the gold
rushes and the Snowy Mountains scheme after World War II. What were the
"big events" that meant a
significant inflow of people from other countries to other areas of
Australia? I am curious about
why we associate the Barossa with Germans, Bondi with Kiwis and
Melbourne with Greeks and whether
there are similar
nationality/geography related areas whose origins students could explore
as part of a theme about
Australian identity.

Any information and insight you can provide will be most appreciated.
